Band Highlight: Monza Express

Band Biography
Monza Express are a five-piece guitar band from Aberdeen, Scotland. Drawing influences from a variety of sources depending on which member you speak to.

Formed in late 2017, the band consists of Fraser Bateman (lead vocals & rhythm guitar), Greg Burgess (Bass), Kris Fraser (Keys) Shaun Reid (Lead Guitar) and David ‘Deco’ Smith (drums). All members being “the wrong side of 30” are no strangers to live music having played in various bands in Aberdeen over the years. A self promoted debut gig in October saw local bar the Cellar packed with an expectant crowd who were not left disappointed.

The band are looking to make more of a mark on the Aberdeen music scene in 2019 and hope the single provides a good starting platform.

Album Review: 'NEVERLOST' by Kyau & Albert

The last time an album by Kyau & Albert were reviewed on this blog was July 20, 2017 celebrating the release of 'Matching Stories'. If you missed that review, it is suggested you click that link and take a listen or two to that album.  As mentioned there, Ralph Kyau & Steven Albert have been creating well respected dance music for over 20 years. Their signature sound mixed with timeless beats, and in some cases familiar vocals continue to entice trance music fans all over the world.

As evident throughout their previous albums and released tracks, 'NEVERLOST' is sure to please even the novice of fans. However, if you tend to enjoy high octane trance meaning higher BPM (beats per minute), then you might find their repertoire too mellow. Nonetheless, their peers such as Armin Van Buuren, Ruben de Ronde, and Markus Schulz have proven either through collaborations or highlighting them on their popular radio shows/podcasts, that they deserve your respect.

In recent months, a few tracks have been leaked by way of those radio shows/podcasts or in their guest mixes or sets on tour. It is nice to finally be able to enjoy this album in its entirety through the modern day music consumption. As this is their 6th studio album, where will this album rank on your Kyau & Albert list?

03 REVERIE / with Steve Brian
05 MAKE IT HOME TONIGHT / feat. Jeza
07 BULLETPROOF / with Hello Machines

Track Review: "Jaiya" by Josh Bailey

For those who are new to this blog, please take the mission statement to heart.  There has been so many great tracks released on OHM Music this year as evident by the abundance of posts here.  Josh Bailey has been featured on this blog before, and it is suggested you take a look at those reviews as well. "Jaiya" offers a dose of melodic layers intertwined in great beats sure to make even the novice fan of trance music become a true trance music fan. Progressive trance is alive and well, and should be respected.  Please support the release of this track on December 14th, and also make sure to check out the latest release on OHM Deep State!

E.P. Review: 'Global Citizen - E.P. 1' by Los Unidades

A few weeks ago, a new documentary was screened in theaters throughout the world for one day only called 'A Head Full of Dreams'  (which can be streamed on Amazon Prime Video) that chronicled the story of famed band Coldplay.  Friend and filmmaker best known for his Oasis documentary years earlier, Mat Whitecross did a great job creating a narrative of the rise of a brotherhood. How does this relate to this E.P.? Well, Los Unidades is new side project/name for Coldplay. If you are unaware, Global Citizen and their mission is just one cause that is dear to Chris Martin and Coldplay's heart. Global Citizen's mission to end world poverty is noble, but with efforts by many in entertainment and US, the world's citizens, it may be achieved sooner rather than later.

To coincide with this past weekend's Global Citizen Festival in South Africa, 'Global Citizen - E.P. 1" featuring vocals by Chris Martin, quotes from Nelson Mandela,  and collaborations with Stargate, Pharrell Williams, Jozzy, Stormzy & Jess Kent, Tiwa Savage, Wizkid, Danny Ocean & David Guetta has now been released.  Combining different musical backgrounds not only created 4 great songs, but created a great narrative for the state of the world right now. Please buy/or stream this E.P., and please become a Global Citizen!

Album Review: 'Evolve' by Ronski Speed

Chances are as a reader and follower of this blog, you are aware electronic music is highly respected. Many posts have been highlighting the brilliance of trance as more tracks and artists dig deep to travel on a cerebral journey of life.  If you are a person that enjoys traditional classical music, think of trance as the "classical" of the electronic music world.

Just as life evolves, so does music. Thus, this brings us to the latest album by Ronski Speed called 'Evolve'.  Research shows that after previous albums 'Pure Devotion' and 'Second World', Ronski did not cut any corners in production of this album. This album should be listened to in its entirety upon first listen. Each track grasps on to elements of progressive trance, euphoric trance, and vocal trance. However, elements of cousin progressive house are mixed quite well. It is important to point out the collaborations with Alan Morris, Ciaran McAuley, Amir Hussain, and Syntrobic.

Track Review: "Who I Am" by OMAIR & Jackson Snapp feat. Avari

You can not fault this blog for its consistency.  Instead of fighting the inevitable, it truly is a must to keep highlighting trance music. Thus, this blog finds itself revisiting the team at OHM Music once again. As a part of the A/S/L EP, you see OMAIR teaming up with Jackson Snapp and Avari for the track "Who I Am".

If you have been following and actually supporting the tracks from this label already, you will find that "Who I Am" follows the progressive trance vibes while added the element of great vocals to the mix. While simplistic in nature, it captures an essence of trance that the scene may lose sight of as more people fall in love with the genre.  Make sure you support their effort by buying and/or streaming this track!

Artist Highlight: Null 'N' Void

The fear of sounding like a broken record (pun intended) about finding and highlighting musical talent lead to the inspiration of this post. As you may or may not know, the goal of this blog is to highlight music in a new and interesting way.  The universal language of music connects the human race, and those with talent deserve the attention. Null 'N' Void has been featured on this blog before, but with the release of their new single, the time came to make sure you support these guys.

As you may have figured out, Null 'N' Void is a 3 piece band specializing in Alternative/Grunge Rock.  They hail from Newcastle, UK. The latest single features a heavy bass line that immediately attracts you to the song, the subsequent vocals, drums, and guitar riffs round out the entire sound. It is highly recommended you support them by supporting the release of their debut single!

What's Up with OHM Music?

Out of fear for sounding or portraying a bias to our friends at OHM Music, there has been a hesitation to constantly feature tracks and artists on their roster. However, they are creating quality trance music, and deserve to be highlighted. In fact, as many posts on this blog suggest, trance music as a whole has been on a roll for quite some time.

"38 Below Zero" by Apollo Nash should immediately added to your collection.  This track aligns with the modern sound by the label while maintaining the authenticity of trance.

"Pari" by Josh Bailey is one of the trance tracks that also aligns with the sound of the label while sustaining artistic integrity to the trance music genre. These melodic layers and distinctive beats harnessed into one track deserve to be added to your collection.

"In Dreams" by Danilo Ercole & OMAIR featuring Bev Wild is the perfect collaboration of melodic layers, beat drops, and great vocals.  Many revere vocal trance as some of the most inspiring and pure trance music available. You should be the judge when you add this track to your collection.

"Our Reflections" by MBX provides an interesting take on the themes that can inspire and create a trance track. The fundamentals of melodic layers and beat drops still hold strong while meeting the standards of sound set by the label. When this track is officially released on October 5th, please make sure to show your support like you have to the previously mentioned tracks.

To support and add all of these tracks to your collection, please head to Beatport in addition to all streaming services out there such as Spotify.

Eminem and Sir Paul McCartney?

This blog has been focusing on trance music for quite some time, but as it is an all encompassing music blog, it's time to switch it up.  The joy of being eclectic presents these two questions. Have you listened to Eminem's new album 'Kamikaze'? Have you listened to Sir Paul McCartney's new album 'Egypt Station'?

The absence of Eminem over the years or the thought he had lost his touch led the drop of 'Kamikaze' to surprise most of us.  The mix of clever rhymes and intricate beats cannot help but bring back memories of early releases of yesteryear. Especially with his call out of other hip hop/rap artists to bring back the art of battles.  Highly recommend checking this album out!

Sir Paul McCartney is a former member of the Beatles and more importantly a musical hero/legend. 'Egypt Station' brings the concept album back, and even if you avoid respecting longevity, you will love this album. From the songwriting, to the vocals, to the musicianship, the entire team should pat themselves on the back. Highly recommend this album as well!

Note: Both albums can be found where ever you buy or stream music these days.

The Latest from OHM Music

As evident and explained on this blog before, if you are a fan of trance music or somehow involved in the trance music scene, the rate at which new tracks become available is staggering.  However, the beauty of having an array of labels and sub-labels allow for intense discovery within trance. Not to take away from any labels producing trance, but OHM Music deserves to continue to be highlighted.

The team at OHM Music seem to be aligning with owner Omair Mirza's vision for the label. Just recently released this month brought "Krypton" by Network X to the world of trance music. The track features uplifting vibes that align with Summer vibes due to its melodic layers and cryptic beats. Also recently released this month, "Tokyo Dreams" by Maglev showcase great talent along with other releases from the same artist. Available for your support on August 17th, "Not With The Times" by Gordey Tsukanov is a brilliant trance track with similar euphoric melodic layers and intense beats drops that should be marveled by trance fans for time to come.  Please support all of these tracks through your wallet and/or streaming at your earliest convenience. These artists along with the entire team at OHM Music deserve such support, and to continue to impress the entire trance world.

Track Review: "Into the Fire" by Arkham Knights

As the trance world embarks on the annual Coldharbour Recordings Day (July 30, 2018), it is time to review the latest track from Arkham Knights. These brothers have been featured and highlighted many times before on this blog, but as their career and recognition continues to rise throughout the trance scene, it is important to note that their talent keeps growing. Every track they have released has been better than the previous.

"Into the Fire" not only incorporates their signature sound of elements of techno with huge melodic layers that should keep not only those new to trance, but seasoned veterans hooked. Not to mention, but the beat drops that make it trance just add to the overall effect.  Assuming you have not read every post on this blog as well as those featuring Arkham Knights before, it should be noted their sound just aligns so well with the overall sound of Coldharbour as well as the vision from boss Markus Schulz. Please support the OFFICIAL release on August 3rd either by buying the track and/or streaming!

Track Review: "Valley of Time" by MBX

The popularity and overall excitement for the trance scene keeps this blog on its toes. Thus, another track from the OHM Music factory deserves to be highlighted. MBX has been highlighted before, and just like his previous work, this track will be featured in sets and playlists for time to come.

"Valley of Time" adds to the overall sound of the label with fundamental trance. The track has great melodic layers mixed in with beat drops that will get your body moving. As evident from the other highlighted tracks from the label, the quality is at a very high level. Looking forward to the official release of this track on July 20th! Please make sure to support it via buying and/or streaming!

Compilation Review: 'In Search of Sunrise' 14 Mixed by Markus Schulz, Gabriel & Dresden, & Andy Moor

Back in the day, you know over 20 years ago, DJ Tiesto began mixing a compilation called 'In Search of Sunrise'. This compilation went on to not only define dance music for years to come, but to birth what is now known as trance music. Back then, there weren't these sub-genre distinctions, but rather a love for electronic music as a whole. This series of compilations also helped define Blackhole Recordings, which is now the umbrella that oversees a lot of labels in trance and beyond.

Despite its success, 'In Search of Sunrise' disappeared for many years with many wondering if it was ever going to return. Well, that question has been answered with the latest version release.  Markus Schulz, Gabriel & Dresden, & Andy Moor were approached to mix a delectable selection of latest and nostalgia within trance music.  With the Summer in full swing, it only made sense to bring back this beloved compilation.  It is highly recommended that on first listen, you listen all the way through to enhance your senses. You will immediately be transformed to an oasis, and feel as you were on a beach at sunrise. Whether you buy or stream, please thank all involved for bringing back such a great series!

Remix Review: "Ozone" by Giuseppe Ottaviani

It is no secret that this blog not only appreciates trance music, but remixes of trance music. Thus, when this remix of "Ozone" began to be tested in many sets by Markus Schulz in recent months, many began to wonder when it was going to be released.  Giuseppe Ottaviani has made a name for himself throughout the scene from his own productions to well received live DJ sets. From his label GO Music to his radio show/podcast GO On Air, it is safe to say that Mr. Ottaviani is a staple in the trance music scene.

Both Markus Schulz and Craig Connelly have created unique remixes of a familiar track, but the beauty is that both remixes make sure to maintain the melodic layers that signified the track in the first place. These two remixes have been released on Blackhole Recordings to remind you of the magnitude of that label.  Stream and/or download your copy today!

Song Review: "Lifeline" by Ben Wright

Despite what many readers and subscribers of this blog may think, different kinds of music genres are welcome. The mission of this blog as well as BB Media Industries, is to highlight the talented or those who may not be getting the recognition they deserve. Garnering relationships with record labels and artists through the passion from this blog has been rewarding.  The roster of artists and/or bands at Sound Hub Studios/Records have been finding impeccable talent from their home region of U.K.

Upon watching the video and listening to "Lifeline" by Ben Wright, it is apparent that this man deserves to be highlighted. The song is top quality from the first note to the ending note. The lyrics are not just thrown into match the musicianship, there was heart thrown in while creating this song. It is highly suggested you not only support this song release, but the entire album 'Lifeline'  if you like great folk/Indie Rock music.

Track Review: "Impulse" by Lee Cassells

As the artwork above might imply, the opportunity to act on an "impulse" can dictate future decisions going forward. This is true for the vibes that this track brings to the repertoire of OHM Music. Lee Cassells might not have been on your radar before this post, but his talent deserves your attention now. The trance scene is constantly growing while maintaining a relative "underground" feel in the realm of electronic music.

"Impulse" incorporates some unique sounds that not only resemble the overall sound of the label, but are keeping with the progressive trance vibe. Throw in some intriguing melodic layers, and you have a yourself a track fit to be added to your collection. Be sure to check out the progressive house mix by Bablak as well.  It is highly recommend you support this track on Beatport or any form when it is OFFICIALLY released July 6th!

Track Review: "Leaflet" by Libranine

The beauty of this blog lies in its mission to highlight talent. Thus, getting wind of a new track from OHM Music is just what the doctor ordered. This time, the blog marvels in the fresh talent from Libranine accompanied with remixes that may be related to the trance genre. With a fresh new EP, Libranine is set to take the world by storm.

"Leaflet" is a track that is more progressive in nature, which is why one of the remixes is progressive house.  It blends well with many different moods, and has let creativity in art soar through its remixes. The subjective nature in music helps propel such evolution within. Make sure you support the release of this track on June 1st!

Album Review: 'Illusion of Perfection' by Spencer Brown

For the past couple of years, a DJ/Producer by the name of Spencer Brown has been making some serious waves among the roster of Anjunabeats. The support from Above & Beyond through tracks on Group Therapy or including them on their 'Common Ground' tour stops has certainly shown a delightful relationship. Spencer Brown already has a reputation for creating great original tracks, remixes, and mashups for journey mixed sets. From experience, despite Mr. Brown's claims, this blog hopes for a "Thriller" by Michael Jackson rework that he debuted on a recent tour to be released.

'Illusion of Perfection' not only is a the perfect title for this album, but it foreshadows some themes you will experience along the way. The production of this mix-album is top notch, and if you don't listen in its entirety, you may not grasp its brilliance. From start to finish, every track builds on the previous one, which leads you on a great journey. This album proves the talent that Spencer Brown has, and this blog looks forward to more and more great progressive trance in the future!  Please support this album in any form you can!

Track Review: "Barra Brava" by Matt Forner

More great trance to come from the team at OHM Music is upon us trance family. Matt Forner has been featured on this blog before as a remix contributor for a track, but looking forward to his own work. Not to sound too biased or a broken record, but have you been paying attention to the quality of trance to come from this label?

"Barra Brava" immediately grabs your attention from it's back beats, beat drops, then melody. However, when the familiar "chanting" one may find at a certain sporting event kicks in, you are in for a listening treat. Many different forms of "chanting" have been used in music, more specifically trance music for awhile, but the way it is incorporated into this track is brilliant. This track has also got some remix attention from Table 18 & Hakan Ozurun. Please support this track any way you can when it is OFFICIALLY released May 18th!

Track Review: "Industry" by Arkham Knights

It has been awhile since the brother duo of Arkham Knights have been highlighted on this blog. However, it should be mentioned they have been churning out great darker trance tracks consistently for quite some time. Their remixes of other artists in the trance scene have been making a great impression. Their addition and help from the team at Coldharbour Recordings & Schulz Music Group has certainly paid off with their debut at A State of Trance (ASOT) 850 celebrations and their upcoming debut at Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) Las Vegas 2018.

"Industry" immediately hits you with an impressive melodic layer upon the first moments of listening. The beat drops and additional darker sounds of techno kick in for an invigorating experience. Overall, the track is just as good, if not better than their previous tracks. Looking forward to more from this duo in the future. Make sure you support the official release of this track May 18th just in time for EDC!

Song Review: "You'll See" by Desensitised

As there continues to be a struggle for equality in gender and or sex qualifications, we can not avoid the fact that music falls into that category just like other industries. In a previous post on this blog, 'Women Power As Needed' was a focus to highlight incredible talent that just so happen to be women. Thanks to our friends at the Sound Hub Record label, the all women group out of the U.K. Desensitised was introduced.

"You'll See" is a interesting song that happens to fall in line with the sound and Indie Rock to hail out of the United Kingdom. The only constructive criticism about the song is the masking of vocals through many different production techniques. In an effort to sound edgy, it takes away from the song. However, lyrically, the song is well written. Regardless of the above mentioned criticism, the airplay on BBC Radio and Planet Rock shows there is a market for such talent. Please support the official release of "You'll See" on May 12th!

Track Review: "Brouhaha" by DYLHEN

Not to sound like a broken record, but the world of trance music is plugging right along. This blog has featured a track by DYLHEN released on Coldharbour Recordings before, but this track is worthy of review. "Brouhaha" has been featured many times in sets and on the Global DJ Broadcast by Markus Schulz. Not to mention countless other sets and radio shows/podcasts throughout the trance music scene.

"Brouhaha" sets a tone of uptempo vibes while layering in a great melody. The beat drops add to the entire track, and overall, the sound is in theme with the Coldharbour sound. A few nuances in the track set it apart from other like artists for a distinct sound you can identify as DYLHEN as you navigate the world of trance music. Please support this track in anyway you can, and look forward to hearing it for years to come!

Album Review: 'Scars' by Ilan Bluestone

The day is finally here. Yes, the day Ilan Bluestone's album 'Scars' is released.  The loyal fans of Above & Beyond's label Anjunabeats (Anjunafamily) have been anticipating this day for quite some time. Mr. Bluestone has garnered a positive reputation of great remixes and original tracks over the years that (in his accent) represent TRONCE. However, as a overall supporter of trance at this blog, this album has been anticipating this album for just as long.

If you have been paying attention, you have probably already been listening to "Scars" & "Frozen Ground" for awhile now. Both tracks feature the vocals of Giuseppe De Luca, and unless you are incapable, will get you in a great mood. "Everybody" features Maor Levi, another Anjunabeats family member. The track is just so catchy, you will be chanting "everybody" right along with the track. "Rival" is the quintessential vocal trance track featuring the vocals of Ellen Smith. The track is well produced from beginning to end. You will notice the inclusion of sound most on the Anjunabeats roster have garnered over the years as you listen to the album in its entirety. It is highly recommended that you support this album in anyway you can!

Track Review: "AR" by Markus Schulz & Cosmic Gate (Sean & Xander Remix)

If you haven't figured out the love for trance music by this blog yet, then you are just not paying attention. From the previous reviews and highlights about the work from Sean & Xander, to the highlights of talent from Markus Schulz and Cosmic Gate themselves, this blog aims to educate. At the end of 2017 leading up to Groove Cruise Miami 2018 (Annual Voyage in January), Markus Schulz & Cosmic Gate held a remix competition for their collaborative track "AR".  With thousands of entries and a deadline dealing with Groove Cruise Miami departure, only one track was declared the winner.

Luckily, Sean & Xander are celebrating the 100th episode of their radio show Inspire with the FREE download release of their remix. Without throwing in the bias, the blog urges you to download and listen to this remix. It captures the essence of the original track, but adds flare to cleanse your listening palette. Hopefully, this remix will be featured in upcoming sets and radio shows/podcasts in the future!

Track Review: "Banshee" by Stuart Ferguson (The Remixes)

The success of the original released tracks on OHM Music have garnered fantastic remix attention. Thus, this blog wants to highlight the talent it takes to create quality remixes of a trance tracks while maintaining integrity to the original. The previous review of "Banshee" by Stuart Ferguson will explain the brilliance of the track.

Two of the remixes of "Banshee" have a progressive house feel, and are produced by Alex Moreli and Division One.  While they stray from trance, they still capture magic from the original track. Kjuna and Nameless have produced two great trance remixes that will be revered by the scene in the future. No matter your particular taste, make sure you support the release of these remixes May 4th on Beatport!

Tribute to Avicii

DJ Mag

When the news of the death of Avicii (Tim Bergling) happened two days ago, the electronic dance community worldwide began to mourn. When you look at the entire career of Avicii, it is almost hard to fathom just how successful and iconic this man truly was for the electronic dance music scene. Many other producers/DJs and celebrities have already made their thoughts known on social media and other platforms.

The amount of musical genres and styles Tim bridged the gap is amazing. The brilliance of combining Country with Electronic beats in "Wake Me Up" or feature the vocals of Etta James in "Levels" made EDM become mainstream.  The masses began to embrace electronic dance music more, which in turn has changed popular music. From Madonna to Coldplay to many other artists, his skills as a producer have been revered.

On the other hand, if you look at the health problems that lead to his retirement from touring a couple of years ago, and possibly (since details haven't been released) his death, this is all very sad. For someone to die at 28 in any regard is way too young!  Thoughts continue to be with his family and friends.

Sadly as when anyone iconic in music dies (Michael Jackson, Prince, Elvis), the support of their art will increase, however, Avicii's legacy will live on.  Shout out to Spotify for your "This Is Avicii" playlist!

Track Review: "Fake News" by OMAIR

In a world where music can be an escape from all of the negativity going on, why not gain inspiration from present times? OMAIR A.K.A. Omair Mirza (featured on this blog many times) has taken upon himself to create a trance track that draws from the current United States political climate.

"Fake News" not only is titled from the catchphrase of the current U.S. President, but the track takes you on a journey of discovery. From the very first beat, to the melodic layers, to the final beat drops, this track should make you reflect on the times. "Fake News" has some progressive trance influence, but will be revered as a pure trance track. Along with the mystery OMAIR has created, make sure you support this track when it is officially released on OHM Music May 11th! Also, make sure to check out OMAIR's set at the quantumVALLEY stage at EDC Las Vegas 2018!

Album Review: 'Gem of the Peak' by FRANK

The vast world of music is showing really no signs of slowing down. The more the blog becomes aware of bands and artists creating great quality music, the more the blog is motivated to highlight their talent. An upcoming band FRANK has been making some waves in the world of Indie Rock.  Their addition to the roster at Sound Hub Records has certainly put them on the map.

Their debut album 'Gem of the Peak' has ten well developed songs.  It's clear that this band has put the time in to hone their craft, and the team at Sound Hub Records believe in their talent. The album is structured beautifully to take you on a journey.  Every song tells a story of love and heartbreak that is sure to relate to anyone. Even more in depth, their musicianship should not go unnoticed along with every vocal.  If you love feel good music with a tad of depth, then it is suggested you support this album when it is released May 11th! The past couple of years have seen Markus Schulz release both 'Watch the World' & 'The Nine Skies' as well as a 'Watch the World' Deluxe version. However, as most in the trance scene are aware, producers never stop producing new tracks. Some of these tracks get official releases or become additions to to their DJ sets around the world. Emma Hewitt has had her beautiful voice featured on many collaborations in the trance scene for years. Ms. Hewitt's collaborations with Cosmic Gate, Ferry Corsten, Gareth Emery, and many more have been very well received by trance fans throughout the world.
